How February got it’s name

by on January 26, 2010

Pink and red. My favorite Valentine's Day color combo.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner; I can hardly believe January is on it’s way out. As we roll into February, I thought I’d share a little  V Day trivia and how February got it’s name. You can read more about it on our site.

It isn’t as romantic as one might assume. Women gently lashed (isn’t gently lashed an oxymoron?) in the februa fashion were thought to become fertile, even if they were barren. The act of such lashings was known as februatio (Latin for “to purify”), hence, February is named. Ta da.

Gentle lashings? Purifying? Barren women becoming fertile? Seems an odd birth of the month or love and romance.

Make it easy on yourself, and your loved ones, by simply giving a letterpress romance card on Valentine’s Day. And skip the lashing!
